Gone Fishing...

The first step is choosing the right location and time. In my experience, a pond or lake is ideal for first-timers, especially on a dock. It provides the flexibility of being on land and gives children a sense of safety in shallow water, access to bathrooms, and more room to enjoy the fishing process. In our experience, fish tend to bite in the morning and early evening. This timing also keeps kids out of direct sunlight and does not affect nap times if they are younger.

After choosing the ideal spot for fishing, the next step is to equip your kids with the appropriate gear to enhance their comfort and enjoyment. Choose child-sized fishing poles and rod & reel combos designed to be lightweight and manageable for smaller hands. Include basic fishing tackle such as bobbers, hooks, sinkers, and bait like worms or crickets. Essential items like sunscreen and insect repellent are crucial to protect your young fishers from the sun and insects. Begin by teaching them the fundamentals of casting. Demonstrate the correct way to hold the fishing rod and practice casting techniques in a spacious, safe area to prevent accidents. Following this, introduce them to the skill of knotting, which is essential for attaching a hook to the fishing line. Start with using brightly colored ropes for clarity and fun, then gradually progress to using actual fishing lines. Always have enough snacks and drinks, as hunger can negatively affect the mood.

Additionally, plan for breaks and activities such as reading or playing simple games to sustain the children’s interest. The primary goal of these trips should be to appreciate the natural setting and foster a sense of wonder in the outdoors, rather than focusing solely on the quantity of fish caught. By interspersing fishing with varied activities, the day remains interesting and enjoyable for everyone. This strategy not only makes the trip more pleasant but also enriches the overall experience. Overall, we just want to spend quality time with our kids, teach them skills, and make memories.

Proud Parent Moment...

Avery asked if she could help with the renovation project at our river house in Oakridge River Park to earn some summer money.

This was a big win for my husband and me because it got her away from screens and out of the house. Moments like these make us feel like she’s starting to understand the value of hard work and responsibility that comes with owning a business and properties. To help Avery learn more about the entrepreneurial lifestyle, we encourage her to read books and pay her to write book reports on them. Although Avery is an excellent student with good grades, we want to ensure that she has all the knowledge and skills necessary to be financially independent. As a family, we don’t pay for everyday household chores like washing dishes or cleaning her room – these are normal contributions to the household. As she gets older, she can choose to outsource these tasks if she wants to.

Babies and Bracelets...

The look of bracelets can certainly change from one minute to the next…

With that, life also just became very different and we experienced the overwhelming joy of becoming parents to Baby Parker. On our way home after getting discharged, I noticed the hospital bracelets on my wrist and jokingly told my husband that they weren’t club bracelets anymore. Although we both had a good laugh, I couldn’t giggle too much due to my c-section. We reminisced about the old days and how far we have come while adjusting the Bluetooth to some old-school club music on low volume. Becoming parents has been an amazing journey for us, and we have learned to use humor to get through the tiredness and exhaustion that comes with it. The feeling of bringing a new life into the world is indescribable and has only strengthened our love for each other. As we prepare for our third baby due at the end of July, we are ready to take on new challenges with love and humor. It’s our way of becoming stronger individuals for each other and our children.

Tips for new parents

Start a collection of pictures and videos of your child when you’re pregnant and document their childhood. You can start by creating an email for them and take pictures or videos from your phone and send them to them and cc yourself. This frees up all the storage on your phone and when your child is older you can give them the login information which will include all the memories you have collected over the years. Not to mention blackmail videos you’ll have for later.

Show off those beautiful photos on your phone

I love decorating and interior design. It must be the creative side of my brain that’s drawn to it. I find it therapeutic and relaxing. Today, I wanted to share an easy way to fill up an empty wall in your home. Just get all those family pictures off your computer or phone and put them into frames. I promise it will make you smile every time you walk by this wall. It’s a beautiful way to decorate a wall and display your family pictures. You can add some chairs, a console, a rug, and maybe even a dog, and you’re done! The frames I used were white distressed frames with a size of 16×20 and an 8×10 mat for 8×10 pictures from Hobby Lobby. Link here!
